At the heart of the APM 2.8 is the ATmega2560 microprocessing core paired with an ATmega32U2 processing chip dedicated entirely to seamless USB connectivity. To achieve stable flights and precise position tracking, the board integrates a professional-grade micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) sensor array
  • Invensense MPU-6000: A 6-DOF (Degrees of Freedom) internal tracking engine containing a combined 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer to calculate spatial orientation and movement instantly.

Upgraded Connections & Compass Routing

The v2.8 revision brings notable hardware routing refinements over older legacy variants. The 1.0mm 6-pin GPS interface was completely updated to standard DF13 connection ports to allow clean, plug-and-play wiring configurations with modern external GPS antennas. [1]
Furthermore, the board solves magnetic interference vulnerabilities caused by nearby power distribution boards and motors. While it carries a built-in magnetometer (compass), the APM 2.8 integrates an on-board physical jumper selection. By removing or adjusting this jumper, users can isolate and completely shut down the onboard compass, routing the system instead to utilize a high-precision, mast-mounted external compass safely away from electromagnetic noise.
