The TCA9548A 8-Channel I2C Multiplexer Breakout Board is the ultimate solution for resolving I2C address conflicts in complex microcontroller projects. In standard electronic design, many popular I2C sensors (such as OLED displays, IMUs, and temperature sensors) have fixed or highly limited hardware addresses. This makes it impossible to connect multiple identical sensors to a single I2C bus. This module resolves that limitation by acting as a high-speed, bidirectional gatekeeper, allowing your microcontroller to communicate with up to eight identical I2C devices seamlessly.
How It Works
The breakout board connects directly to your main microcontroller (such as an Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi) using standard SDA (Data) and SCL (Clock) lines. When you want to talk to a specific sensor, you send a simple command to the TCA9548A to select the desired downstream channel (from SC0/SD0 up to SC7/SD7). The multiplexer then routes the I2C traffic exclusively to that channel, effectively isolating the other seven lines to prevent signal interference and addressing overlap.

- Massive Scalability: It breaks one I2C port into eight independent ports. By using the onboard hardware address pins (A0, A1, A2), you can change the base address of the multiplexer itself from
0x70to0x77. This allows you to cascade up to 8 of these breakout boards on a single system, controlling a massive total of 64 identical I2C devices. - Voltage Flexibility & Level Shifting: The board operates on a wide input voltage range from 1.65V to 5.5V. Because the switches are bidirectional pass-gates, the module supports mixed-voltage logic. You can power the main chip at 3.3V while safely communicating with 5V sensors, protecting sensitive components.
- Robust & Breadboard-Friendly: Measuring just 31.5mm x 21.6mm, it easily fits onto standard prototyping breadboards. It includes an active-low Reset pin (RST) to let your microcontroller reset the entire multiplexer bus hardware if a downstream sensor freezes.
