The HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Distance Sensor Module is a highly popular, non-contact range measurement sensor designed for microcontroller projects. Operating on a 5V DC supply, it utilizes high-frequency sound waves to accurately detect objects and calculate distances from 2cm to 400cm with high precision. The compact board features a dual-transducer design
Product Overview
The HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Distance Sensor Module is one of the most widely used, cost-effective, and accurate non-contact range measurement sensors in the electronics ecosystem. Designed for easy integration with microcontrollers like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and PIC, this compact board uses acoustic echolocation to measure physical distances without touching the target object. It acts as an electronic “eye” for automated systems, allowing devices to perceive spatial layouts, calculate gaps, and detect approaching objects in real time.
How It Works: Sonic Radar Technology
The module features a distinctive dual-metal cylinder design resembling a pair of eyes. This setup contains a matched pair of acoustic transducers:
- The Transmitter (T): When triggered, this transducer emits a burst of high-frequency ultrasonic sound waves (40 kHz) out into the surrounding air. These sound waves are completely inaudible to human ears.
- The Receiver (R): If the sound waves hit a physical obstacle or wall, they reflect backwards toward the module. The receiving transducer listens for this echo wave and detects its exact arrival time.
By calculating the precise time delay between the sound wave being sent and its return echo, the host microcontroller can use the constant speed of sound in air (roughly 340 meters per second) to calculate the exact distance to the target down to the millimeter.
Key Hardware & Operational Specifications
- Wide Detection Window: Offers a reliable non-contact measurement range from 2 cm up to 400 cm (approx. 13 feet) with a precision accuracy of up to 3 mm.
- Narrow Measuring Angle: Possesses an effective sensor cone angle of
< 15 degrees, allowing it to focus straight ahead on isolated objects without getting confused by distant side walls. - Low Current Consumption: Draws a meager 15mA during active scanning and less than 2mA while idling, keeping power budgets highly optimized for portable, battery-powered robotics.
Simple 4-Pin Solderless Interface
The module is built with a standard 2.54mm pitch 4-pin right-angle header that plugs directly into electronic breadboards or female jumper wires:
VCC: 5V DC Main system power input.Trig(Trigger Input): Receives a brief 10-microsecond high pulse from the microcontroller to command the sensor to blast a sonic wave.Echo(Echo Output): Outputs a logic high pulse whose duration (width) corresponds directly to the total travel time of the sound wave.GND: Central ground connection to tie into your microcontroller’s power plane.
Common Engineering Applications
- Obstacle Avoidance Robots: Giving rolling smart cars, drones, and rovers the sensory data needed to dodge walls, furniture, or stairs.
- Liquid Level Monitoring: Measuring the distance to the surface of water inside storage tanks, wells, or vats without contaminating the fluid with submerged electronic leads.
- Interactive Installations: Creating smart, motion-activated museum exhibits, greeting displays, or automatic trash cans that open as a person approaches.
- Digital Parking Guides: Crafting custom garage backing assistance indicators that toggle warning LEDs based on how close a car gets to the rear wall.
