This MQ-2 Gas Sensor Module detects concentrations of smoke, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), butane, propane, methane, alcohol, and hydrogen in the surrounding air. Driven by a reliable LM393 comparator chip, it features a dual-signal output layout providing both a real-time analog voltage value (AOUT) and a simple digital threshold alert (DOUT). An onboard multi-turn potentiometer allows you to easily calibrate the digital trip sensitivity for smart home and automation safety projects.

MQ-2 Gas and Smoke Sensor Module for Arduino and Microcontrollers

Overview

The MQ-2 Gas Sensor Module is an electronic detector engineered to sense concentrations of combustible gases and smoke in the ambient air. Built around a specialized SnO2 (Tin Dioxide) sensing element and an onboard LM393 voltage comparator chip, this module functions as an early-warning safety node. It is highly utilized in automated home safety configurations, smart ventilation devices, and air-quality monitoring rigs, bridging industrial gas tracking with low-profile microcontroller development.

Broad Detection Spectrum

The gas-sensitive layer on the internal heating element changes its conductivity as target gas molecules increase in density. The MQ-2 provides a broad detection spectrum, responding efficiently to multiple hazardous and flammable substances:
  • Combustible Gases: High sensitivity to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), butane, propane, and methane (natural gas).
  • Vapors & Smoke: Excellent detection profiles for airborne alcohol vapors, hydrogen leaks, and standard wood/paper smoke concentrations.

Dual-Signal Outputs with Manual Threshold Tuning

The module splits its data delivery down a standard 4-pin header block, offering versatile monitoring options for developers:
  • Analog Output (AOUT): Generates a continuous, real-time analog voltage signal (0V to 5V) that scales directly with gas concentration levels, perfect for precise data logging and plotting.
  • Digital Output (DOUT): Produces a simple, clean High/Low logic signal (TTL level) that trips instantly when gas levels bypass your predefined safety threshold.
  • Potentiometer Calibration: A blue multi-turn trimmer potentiometer sits on the rear of the board, allowing you to manually spin and calibrate the exact gas concentration level required to trigger the digital DOUT alert pin.

Technical Specifications

  • Operating Input Voltage: 5V DC ± 0.1V
  • Current Consumption: ~150mA (due to the internal heating element)
  • Core Sensor Type: MQ-2 Metal Oxide Semiconductor Gas Sensor
  • Comparator IC: LM393 Dual Differential Comparator
  • Detection Concentration Range: 300 to 10,000 ppm (parts per million) for combustible gases
  • Preheat / Burn-In Time Required: 24 to 48 hours for initial deployment; 1 to 2 minutes for standard startup warm-up
  • Status Indication Layout: Onboard Power LED and DOUT Trigger LED
  • Pin Out Configuration: VCC (+5V), GND (Ground), DO (Digital Output), AO (Analog Output)

Applications

  • DIY residential gas leak alarms and emergency kitchen smoke detectors
